By Lisa Hughes, MagicWand Weddings. Posted January 18th, 2011

The primary reasons for save the date cards, provides guests to hold that day for your wedding. It also serves to share other information like travel and accommodations to make in advance. Save the dates allow important details guests need to consider for your wedding. Developing the save the date card is the first stationery item to select. We've provided a few practical tips for content review.

1.Word Selection
Say "Save the Date" at the beginning of the card. This is not an invitation, so make it clear of your event details. Remember… you are asking them to mark their calendar, so they don't make other plans on your wedding date.

2. Size of your Save the Date
Select the size stationery card you like. Bear in mind the quantity of information you wish to provide to guests. A standard 4 ¼ x 6 postcard size are less expensive to mail and do not require an envelope. Some size envelopes require additional postage such as square envelopes and heavier weight paper.

3. Wedding Web Sites
An emerging custom is the wedding website. Free hosting is available at many bridal web sites. Be sure to link to the ceremony and reception location, hotels and point of interest in the area.

4. Be Informative - Avoid Confusion
Place first and last names on your save the date cards. This will avoid any confusion. Some guests might not recognize by just first names.

5. Target Audience & General Audience
Speak to your general audience for the save the date card. Keep in mind this notice will go to all guests, so keep it simple. You always can design versions to accommodate a style for 2 audiences.

6. Simple Type
Save the date cards are in it's simplest form, information. It may be tempting to use a variety of different fonts, but try to stay within the design format. Limit the type to two script (formal) style fonts or simple fun style fonts. If you use to many styles, your save the dates might be difficult to read. Similarly that is the same for font sizes, so stay within three font levels. Select a larger font for the announcement, then a smaller for the names. Then a smaller size should be for the details.

7. Be Clear
Make your font very legible. This is important when printing numbers.

8. Best Resolution
If there is a graphic or photo on the card, be aware it has the highest resolution possible. Also make sure it prints well on the card stock you select. Perhaps use your engagement photo, when selecting your graphic or use one you like to represent your theme. If your wedding will take place at a destination, design your graphic image to support the theme of your wedding.

9. Add Your Own Touches
Simply embellish your save the date cards to die-cut designs on your card. Add stickers or rubber stamp images to get the theme you are trying to achieve.

10. Color
Save the dates are the perfect time to showcase your wedding colors. Feel free to expand your colors and don't be limited to them. Here is the beginning of your color message combination. Mixing a color card with colored text and even a colored envelope will create a beautiful combination.
